Where Sarasota Is Located
Sarasota is a city located in Sarasota County on the central west coast of Florida. Its official limits include Sarasota Bay and several barrier islands between the bay and the Gulf of Mexico. These islands, which are also called keys, include Siesta Key, Lido Key, and Longboat Key and are famous all over the world for the wonderful quality of their beaches. The city had a population of 54,349 in 2004, and the city is part of the thriving Sarasota-Bradenton-Venice Metropolitan area. Sarasota has some of the oldest and newest homes in the Florida region.
Some housing estates were built over 50 years ago as winter vacation homes, and others are new gated seafront villages complete with manicured rounds, marble foyers, and replete with the newest fixtures and technological advances, as well as spectacular views of the bay. Homeowners and residents from all neighborhoods can enjoy a wide variety of activities available throughout Sarasota, from joining art lessons, viewing unique collections of paintings and murals, seashell creations, sand sculptures, or visiting the new art of the Ringling School of Art students.
Sarasota Is famous As An Artist’s Haven
Sarasota began to acquire a reputation as an artists’ haven in the early 1920s. In the decades that followed, artists from all disciplines, which include writers, performers, musicians, and architects, have made homes around the community. Sarasota is the base of the Florida West Coast Symphony, founded by Ruth Cotton Butler in 1949, and its famed Sarasota Music Festival which draws musicians, teachers, and lovers of chamber music worldwide for a three-week event music. The city is also home to the Sarasota Ballet, Sarasota Opera, Florida Studio Theater, The Sarasota Players and numerous other musical, dance, artistic, and theatrical venues.
The city’s warm climate also made Sarasota famous as a popular golf destination. The Sara Bay course in the Whitfield area was designed by golf architect Donald Ross. A lot of golf courses dot the area, including the one originally laid out for the hotel John Ringling planned on the southern tip of Longboat Key. Sarasota also is home to Ed Smith Stadium, where the Cincinnati Reds, Cincinnati’s major league baseball MLB team, come here for their spring training, and is home to the minor league Sarasota Reds. Before 1997, the city had a long association with the Chicago White Sox; both through spring training and through Sarasota’s minor-league team, which was once known as the Sarasota White Sox.
