Sales Coaching Tip - Simply Honor Your Voice Mail Message
Category: BusinessDo you have a voice mail message that either implies or promises that you will call back within 2 to 24 hours? What happens when you hear that message and the person on the other end does not honor that commitment? How do you feel?
As a sales professional first who has a business that provides business coaching training services to other sales professionals, small business owners to C-Level executives, I meet with numerous prospects who call me. Within the follow-up process, I will call the individuals back to determine our next step.
More often than not this is what I hear when I receive the voice mail:
“Hi, I am sorry that I could not accept your message. Please leave your name and phone number and I promise to call you back within 24 hours.”
Then I wait the 24 hours and 90% of the time most of these individuals do not call back because I am not a customer. So if this is their rationale then their voice mail should sound like this:
“Hi, I am sorry that I could not accept your message. Please leave your name and phone number and I promise to call you back within 24 hours unless you are a vendor, a potential vendor or someone who does want to spend money with me.”
Of course, no reasonable person in business would leave such a message. Yet, their failure to honor their voice mail commitment suggests that this is what is being heard on the other end of the phone.
When business people fail to honor their commitments as promised in their voice mails, they are sending an even far dangerous message. Is this someone you want to do business with? If this individual cannot honor a simple phone call, will they honor paying their bills?
Yes, the world is busy, but not that busy that you cannot honor your commitments and demonstrate high business ethics. So if you want to increase sales, then take this coaching tip to heart and start honoring your promise to return that call in that promised time frame.
